FAL (Fal Calzados de Seguridad y Calzados Fal-Chiruca) has decided to compensate 100% of the CO2 emissions generated by the devastating fire that destroyed its facilities in Arnedo, La Rioja, last December.
- The company has calculated that the fire emitted 416.46 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, a figure verified by AENOR.
- To mitigate this impact, FAL will plant up to 1,800 trees in its Chiruca Forest, located in the La Rioja municipality of Bergasa.
Calzados Fal-Chiruca have been pioneers in the development of responsible environmental policies. Since 2015, they have carried out the ‘Chiruca Forest Absorption’ project, registered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which seeks to calculate, reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to this ongoing effort, they have reforested 23 hectares with 25,170 trees of various species, making a significant contribution to local biodiversity and CO2 absorption.
In the face of the December disaster, FAL has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. Instead of simply mitigating emissions from its production processes, the company has decided to offset the emissions caused by the fire, thus reinforcing its commitment to a zero carbon economy. According to Jorge Orío, Head of Quality and Environment at FAL, ‘the carbon footprint of an organisation reflects the impact of its activities on climate change. In this case, we have decided to go further and fully offset the emissions from the fire, transforming the CO2 emitted into new biomass by planting trees’.
FAL was the first footwear company in Spain to obtain AENOR CO2 Carbon Footprint certification in 2012 and has maintained the Full Carbon Footprint Cycle ever since. It also has an Environmental Management System certified under the UNE-EN ISO 14001 standard, which is integrated into its Quality and Occupational Health and Safety Management System. This holistic approach to environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of FAL’s philosophy and has proven to have a positive impact on both the company’s reputation and its financial results.
The increasing emission of carbon dioxide is one of the biggest global environmental challenges. Aware of its responsibility, FAL continues to lead with concrete actions that not only offset its carbon footprint, but also contribute to the conservation and improvement of the environment, thus reaffirming its commitment to a more sustainable future.
