With its Carbon Free initiative, the company from La Rioja reaffirms its commitment to the environment, working to reduce and offset CO₂ emissions in its manufacturing processes.
The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, responsible for global warming and the increase in global temperature, has become one of the main challenges for the international community.
For this reason, Calzados FAL – Chiruca® has made a commitment to be a Carbon Free company, offsetting 100% of its CO2 emissions at each stage of production.
To this end, the ‘Chiruca Forest Absorption’ project was launched, a 23-hectare plantation on its own land, where more than 24,000 trees have been planted, contributing to the significant absorption of CO2.
This innovative spirit in their sustainable policies has allowed them, since 2012, to be pioneers in the certification of the CO2 Carbon Footprint controlled by AENOR. In addition, they have an Environmental Management System certified according to the UNE EN ISO 14001 standard, which allows them to establish clear goals and environmental improvement programmes.
But what does it mean to be Carbon Free? It is the compensation of 100% of greenhouse gas emissions that are emitted into the atmosphere in the production of footwear.
And what is calculated? We calculate the tonnes of CO2 emitted each year in the following actions involved in the manufacture of footwear: transport of raw materials received; complete manufacture of footwear; product promotion: commercial trips, etc.; transport of shipment of goods; roaming of employees and consumption of energy and facilities.
After calculation, how does Chiruca® compensate? Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, therefore, by planting trees in the ‘CHIRUCA FOREST’ located in the town of Bergasa (La Rioja).
And finally, how is it demonstrated? 1.- Verifying the Carbon Footprint through Aenor under the GHG Protocol: ‘Calculated CO2 Carbon Footprint’. 2.- Verifying the calculation, reduction and compensation of the Carbon Footprint through the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Spanish Government, being the first company to have achieved this. 3.- With the installation of solar panels in our own facilities, generating clean energy. 4.- With the acquisition of the rest of the necessary electrical energy through renewable energies.
Chiruca® firmly believes that environmental responsibility not only benefits the planet, but also its customers. Together, we can build a more sustainable future. Because at Chiruca® they know that every step counts, both in the mountains and in caring for our planet.
