At Chiruca, we don't just choose our materials carefully. We also consider their behaviour, origin and impact on the environment.
The hides used come from animals that have already been slaughtered for food consumption, which allows an existing natural resource to be exploited without generating additional environmental impact. This is a more efficient production method that is more consistent with a sustainable vision of the product.
THERMAL BALANCE
Chiruca boots are made from Spanish cowhide leather. There is one fundamental reason for choosing domestic leathers: thermal balance.
In cold climates, cattle develop hides with very closed pores, which prevents perspiration from escaping properly and can cause discomfort when wearing the boots. In very hot climates, the opposite occurs: the pores are so open that perspiration evaporates too quickly, causing the foot to become excessively cold in snowy or icy conditions.
Only leathers from cattle raised in temperate climates, such as Spain, offer balanced breathability. They allow the foot to breathe without losing their insulation, maintaining a stable temperature and lasting comfort.
How to choose and work with the leather of a Chiruca boot
1st LAYER // NUBUCK LEATHER
This is the outermost and most resistant part of the leather, with a dense structure and compact fibres, giving it great durability and abrasion resistance.
If its surface is subjected to a sanding or fine brushing process, the result is what is known as nubuck leather, which retains the strength of full-grain leather but acquires a velvety, peach-skin-like feel and an elegant matt appearance.
This type of leather is highly prized in the manufacture of technical footwear for its breathability, wear resistance and understated aesthetic.
2nd LAYER // SECTIONED LEATHER
It comes from the inner layers of the skin, once the flower has been separated. It has a more open and porous structure, giving it a soft and velvety feel on both sides. Split leather has good flexibility and breathability properties, which is why it is also used in outdoor footwear, particularly in combination with reinforcements or water-repellent treatments.
It also offers excellent value for money, making it suitable for certain lighter models.
